Silver oxide batteries differ from alkaline batteries in their higher voltage level (1.55V compared with 1.5V in alkaline batteries) and the construction of the battery itself: in silver oxide batteries, the cathode is made of silver oxide and the anode of zinc. In alkaline batteries, the cathode is made of manganese dioxide and the anode of zinc oxide. In both battery types, the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide.

Silver oxide batteries last longer than alkaline batteries, so they are often used in devices such as watches, calculators, meters and other electronic devices. They have the highest capacity-to-weight ratio.
